Slemenova špica is a very popular mountain destination in the Municipality of Kranjska Gora, with a relatively easy route from the Vršič mountain pass that attracts many visitors. But mass tourism negatively affects nature. An extensive network of shortcuts resulted not only from large number of visitors, but also steep slopes and weather phenomena (heavy downpours, long-lasting droughts, strong winds…). The existing vegetation was trampled, numerous new routes emerged. Heavy rains eroded the soil on damaged trails, which presented potential danger for hikers.

In October, the planned earthworks on eroded areas began. This included rebuilding the degraded part of the trail, covering the erosion trenches with grass turf and closing down the most damaged part of the trail. The work was finished just before the first cold days, but there are still some tasks to be done next year – covering the ground with green hay, setting up drainage, as well as educating the public about the importance of restoration and staying on the trails.
